I should start this post telling you that I had no idea up until just about a week before I was scheduled to meet Dr. Travis Stork at BlogHer’13 in Chicago, that I would be interviewing a pop culture sensation.
And you know how much mom a la mode loves pop culture.
Sure, I knew of his TV fame on CBS’s The Doctors. But let’s be real here – I don’t own TiVo (gasp!) and at 9am on most weekdays, I’m settling into yet another rousing episode of Rolie Polie Olie or Calliou On-Demand. So aside from magazine or web articles I happened to catch on Dr. Stork, I didn’t realize he was kind of a big deal. Especially to those devotees of ABC’s The Bachelor – also a show that I don’t watch (am more of a BRAVO TV gal.)
Out at BlogHer’13, with my notebook in hand, and glasses firmly in place above my nose, I was ready to ask Dr. Stork hard-hitting questions about family health, the role of probiotics in our everyday life and if I was using Simply Saline correctly.
But it was REALLY hard to think straight amidst the hoots and hollers coming from the other conference attendees passing by the Simply Saline booth where he was stationed. Those gals were well aware of his role on The Bachelor and weren’t afraid to show their appreciation.
And then there was me – little bespectacled mom a la mode, ready to talk snot and bacteria with one of the hottest doctors on reality and talk show television.
Dr. Stork was at BlogHer’13 representing Simply Saline by Arm and Hammer – a product that I’ve used for years and years. During our brief meeting, we spoke about how awesome a product it is, and how safe it is for daily use since it’s non-habit forming and literally just salt and water in a can. I was happy to learn that it’s especially effective during allergy season to wash away pollen, debris and other potential allergens that can make you otherwise uncomfortable. And there’s also a Simply Saline product out for kids, too, which I probably should have been using on Roc during those high peak pollen days in late Spring/early Summer. Since late Summer allergy season is just around the corner, you can bet that I’ll be stocking up!
We then chatted about probiotics, and like many doctors, Dr. Stork is a fan of their daily use. But he did indicate that the jury is still out on their effectiveness and that there is a lot to learn about what they will do for us long-term. However, he did acknowledge that our gut health is very important to our overall health. And that getting probiotics through natural food sources like yogurt is a great way to get other good things for our bodies like Calcium and Vitamin D.
It was a brief meeting, but a great one at that. And was delighted to get the chance to insert myself into the pop culture equation just for a few minutes.
Oh, and for those fans of The Bachelor out there – despite his rugged good looks and his height (he’s got to be at least 6’ 2’’), Dr. Stork is married to pediatrician as of last year. More on that from People magazine.
