Earlier this week I headed back to where my career in communications first started: The ABC Channel 7 Cafeteria on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
The only difference was that I wasn’t fetching lunch for myself or the news producer for whom I interned – instead, I was in the “holding area” for the studio audience of The Katie Show .
I was first made aware of Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show back in August when she appeared as a keynote speaker at BlogHer ’12. She spoke openly and earnestly about transitioning herself and her career to this new format and new network, as well as how the role of social media would be a huge part of what she was looking to do with the show concept.
She had me at transition.
I leaned over to my friend and fellow blogger, Pam K. of Triple Threat Mommy at the luncheon and said, “We are going to this show.”
And so we did.
I am thrilled to report that Katie was as warm, sincere and engaging as she appears on television. In between segment tapings, she interacted with us, her audience, like we were college chums: I filled her in on SJP’s performance in last week’s Glee episode (Katie said she DVRd it but hadn’t had the chance to view it yet) while Pam and I nodded approvingly (from our second row seats!) at her wardrobe choice right before segment 1 when she openly asked us, “Does this outfit look ok?” (side note: both of her outfits looked fantastic. We didn’t catch what labels she was wearing for show 1, but she told us she was wearing a Banana Republic sleeveless blouse and Miu Miu patent leather platform heels for show 2 [they were AMAZING!])
They were taping two shows the morning we attended. The topic matter of the first show was heavy, but important for parents of high school and college –aged children, while the second show had our eyes popping out of our heads and our mouths agape (think Christian and Anastasia Grey).
Right after the show wrapped, while the production staff milled around taking care of business, Katie knelt right next to our row to get our thoughts on that wacky second show.
“Kinda weird, right?” she asked.
OMG Katie Couric is – again – talking to us!!!
And we proceeded to chat for another few minutes about the nature of the segment, with her sharing a personal story of a friend of hers to us.
Yep, just call us Katie’s sorority sisters! 😉
As you can tell, it was a complete thrill to be an audience member at the Katie Show. If you haven’t had the chance to catch the show on TV, check your local listings, but in New York it is on Channel 7 at 3pm.
And in case you are wondering, the show tapings we sat in on will air this week on Thursday and Friday (unless otherwise indicated on the Katie Show website.)
