Summer is a time for fun, rest and relaxation. Yet it is also a long period of time without consistent academic instruction, and many students regress significantly during this season. Help your child avoid the summer slide and continue developing his academic skills with the ideas detailed below.
Reading is one of the most critical activities to continue over the summer. Take a trip to the library or bookstore with your child and help her pick out a set of books or a new series that she’d like to read over the summer. If she’s a non-reader, she can select books she’d like for you to read to her. You can also tie in other non-traditional reading activities. Have her read the newspaper each morning and cut out interesting articles. Research some cooking sites with her and have her print recipes that she can later cook (and read) with you. Comics and magazines also serve as great reading material.
Educational Trips
During the summer, carve out some time to take trips to educational locations. Your child might learn about scientific concepts or historical sites at school, but going to museums and seeing real science concepts come to life or statues of famous historical figures can add additional value to learning. Through such educational trips, children can understand these concepts in a more in depth manner and can develop a true interest in a given topic or content area – one that can be expanded upon through books, games, apps and other activities.
Educational Apps & Toys
There are so many toys, apps and games for to chose from. It is important that you select the right ones for your child, based on age, skills and interest level. If your child loves worms, for instance, look for apps and tools that build core academic skills but that also teach these skills within the context of the topic of interest (books about worms, games that teach reading using passages about worms, etc.). The more your can engage your child in something she enjoys, the more she will benefit from it academically.
Science Experiments
Science experiments serve as a great way to have fun with your child while continuing to develop important academic skills over the summer. Try growing crystals, making slime or making tie-dye milk. The opportunities are endless! You can look online for specific science experiments or purchase a kid’s science experiment book filled with activities.
