The Tony Awards are on this Sunday night and there’s one show on Broadway that’s bound to clean up this weekend: Kinky Boots.
My parents and I had the privilege of seeing Kinky Boots a few months back while it was still in previews at the Hirschfeld Theatre. And was it a treat! Not only was the show itself fantastic, but we could not be more proud of our dear family member, John, who is one of the producers involved in the production. And it was with a heavy heart but a warm love that we remembered his partner, our cousin Sal, who is now deceased but had inspired John to be involved with this production after they discovered the film Kinky Boots at Sal’s hospital bedside. I know I speak for my parents when I say that we could just feel Sal’s spirit soaring around us as those performers hit their marks up on that stage.
Our evening started at the Ember Room, a Thai-inspired Hell’s Kitchen restaurant, with a private dinner celebrating Kinky Boot’s premiere on the great white way.
And then it was off to our orchestra seats to catch the show.
As previously referenced, Kinky Boots started as a movie and was adapted to stage by theater and rock royalty by the likes of Harvey Fierstein (book), Cyndi Lauper (music and lyrics) and Jerry Mitchell (direction and choreography).
The show packs punch with catchy tunes, sassy dialogue and some amazing costumes and staging. And with lines like, “The sex is in the heel” and “Ladies and Gentleman….and those of you still in question,” you can imagine the kind of night you are in for! (Best to find a sitter for this night out on the town…)
I thought my NYC-based blogger friend, Mitch of Gay NYC Dad did a pretty rockin’ job of capturing the true essence of Kinky Boots in his write up. Catch it here to get a fuller synopsis of the show and its awesomeness in all things kinky. (Note his run-ins with Harvey Fierstein and Ms. Lauper, too!)
It’s no surprise that it’s the most Tony – nominated show of the year! Kinky Boots also won:
2012 – 2013 Outer Critics Circle Award:
OUTSTANDING NEW BROADWAY MUSICAL
OUTSTANDING NEW SCORE – Cyndi Lauper
OUTSTANDING ACTOR IN A MUSICAL – Billy Porter
2013 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards:

2013 Clearance Derwent Award:

2013 Stage Directors & Choreographers Foundation’s Mr. Abbott Award:

Yep, it’s that good.
And hopefully, Kinky Boots will add 13 Tonys to the roster on Sunday night.
Everybody say “YEAH!” for Kinky Boots!
